Principles for Gathering and Conduct

Principles for Gathering and Conduct

As we gather, please:

  1. Be present. Silence devices and leave the room if you need to work on emails or other tasks not related to the workshop.
  2. Take care of your mental and physical needs.
  3. Be timely and respect the agenda so that we can begin and end on time.
  4. Be mindful of how much airtime you may be taking and share the floor with others.
  5. Recognize that everyone is a teacher and a learner; ask questions, and approach others with curiosity over judgment. Share your stories and expertise while making space to listen also.
  6. Respect the different concerns and sensitivities that speakers and participants may have at this time. Do not photograph or record anyone’s materials, speech, or image without their explicit permission.

The following principles are directly excerpted or adapted from the International Association for Wildland Fire with permission.

Expected conduct

  1. Base all professional and civic behavior on honesty, fairness, good will, and respect for the law.
  2. Carry out actions in a civil and dignified manner; act professionally and respectfully toward one another.
  3. Respect the needs, contributions, and viewpoints of others.
  4. Give due credit to others for their methods, ideas, or assistance.
  5. Always present, to the best ability, accurate and complete information.
  6. Always indicate on whose behalf any public statements are made.
  7. Treat all participants, attendees, staff, volunteers, and vendors with respect and consideration, valuing a diversity of views and opinions.
  8. Communicate openly with respect for others, critiquing ideas rather than individuals.
  9. Respect the rules and policies of the meeting venue.
  10. Speak up if observing anything at the workshop that conflicts with these principles.

Unacceptable conduct

Unacceptable conduct from anyone at the workshop will not be tolerated. This includes, but is not limited to:

  1. Unprofessional or civic behavior involving dishonesty, unfairness, discrimination, harassment, fraud, confidentiality, or disrespect for the law.
  2. Intimidating, harassing, discriminatory, derogatory, or demeaning behavior, speech, or materials directed towards others.
  3. Violence, threats of violence, or violent language directed against another person.
  4. Sexist, racist, homophobic, transphobic, or otherwise discriminatory jokes and language.
  5. Personal insults, particularly those related to gender, sexual orientation, race, religion, or disability.
  6. Physical or verbal abuse of any attendee, speaker, volunteer, exhibitor, staff member, volunteer, service provider, vendor, or other meeting guest.
  7. Verbal comments related to gender, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, religion, national origin, inappropriate use of nudity and/or sexual images in public spaces or in presentations, or threatening or stalking any attendee, speaker, volunteer, exhibitor, staff member, service provider, or other meeting guest.
  8. Disruption of presentations and sessions.

If you witness or are subjected to unacceptable conduct

If you are subjected to unacceptable conduct, notice that someone else is being subjected to it, or have any other concerns, please notify a workshop organizer immediately. We will be identifiable by a colored ribbon on our nametags, or can be found at the registration table at most times.
